SS-31 (also known as Elamipretide or MTP-131) is a tetrapeptide that selectively targets the inner mitochondrial membrane. It belongs to the Szeto-Schiller (SS) peptide class and concentrates within mitochondria at approximately 1,000-fold higher levels than in the cytoplasm, enabling targeted intervention at the site of cellular energy production.

Research Applications: SS-31 works by binding to cardiolipin — a phospholipid critical to the electron transport chain — stabilizing cristae structure and improving ATP production efficiency. Research has examined its potential in heart failure, renal ischemia-reperfusion injury, aging-related muscle decline, and neurodegenerative disease models.
