MOTS-C (Mitochondrial ORF of the 12S rRNA type-c) is a 16-amino acid peptide encoded within the mitochondrial genome — one of the first mitochondria-derived peptides (MDPs) identified. It is released by mitochondria in response to metabolic stress and functions as a retrograde signaling molecule that travels from mitochondria to the nucleus to regulate gene expression.
